These past few days have placed a spotlight on the prejudice, suffering, pain, and injustice black people in the US and around the world face daily. This conversation has also brought to light how Malaysia’s own communities of colour battle with discrimination.
It angers and disgusts me that people are being killed and treated unfairly because of the colour of their skin. We do not harbour hatred for people of a different colour when we are born; racism is learned. Instead of treating people differently based on the colour of their skin, we’ve got to accept and celebrate people for who they are. Everyone wants to be understood, to feel valued, and to feel safe- privileges that are not a given.
While it seems as though things may never get better, I believe we can make a change through our actions. Donate, protest, organize, and vote to elect candidates who will act on reform and fight to give people of colour the same social, economic, and political rights and opportunities as those who are more privileged. Every effort, no matter how large or small, can help make a difference in the lives of those affected most by systemic racism and inequality. #BlackLivesMatter #EndRacism #Asians4BlackLives #justiceforgeorgefloyd ✊🏽✊🏾
